For undergraduate students or recent graduates
You must have taken either two courses (3000-level and above) with me within the past 4 semesters (including the current one) from the date you request a recommendation, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.35/4.0, or one with a grade of at least 3.7/4.0 . Your overall University GPA must be at least 3.0/4.0. I reserve the right to request that you furnish me with a transcript of your grades. For graduate students
For admission to a graduate program leading to a degree: I write letters of recommendation only for admission to graduate programs in French, other Romance languages, comparative literature, or other modern or classical languages.
I must be well-acquainted with your work (M.A. exams don't count, but Ph. D. prelims do), either because you've taken with me a graduate course (6000-level) or seminar (8000-level) with a grade of 4.0, or I am your Major Professor or a member of your Advisory Committee (in any case, the grade provision applies). In either case, I reserve the right to request that you furnish me with a transcript of your grades.
Please note:
Regardless of grade, neither Freshman seminars (FRES 1010 & FRES 1020) nor FREN 2500 qualify for a letter of recommendation
No restrictions, but the letter will state that it should not be considered a letter of recommendation.
Please note that I write only confidential recommendations.
Regardless of what type
of letter you request,
you
must agree to waive your right
(under the Family and
Education Act of 1974)
to see that letter.
If an undergraduate: please fill out the form, sign it (that indicates you agree to waive your right to see the recommendation as per above), and give it, along with any other needed materials securely attached, to the Administrative Assistant in Gilbert 201, who will put it in my mailbox. Please do not put anything directly in my mailbox or slide it under my office door. Graduate students with mailroom access may use my mailbox directly.
