December 1st Deadline! The Department of Romance Languages French Study Abroad Award is a $1000 prize for French-language study in a French-speaking country. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Georgia. The award recipient will be recognized at the Pi Delta Phi ceremony in April. Download the application.

Upcoming colloquia, We've got one more colloquia this fall on Friday, December 4 from 3:30-4:30 in 350K Gilbert: Kenneth Widgren's talk entitled “A Phenomenology of the Fantastic.” We hope you can join us. The percolator has been resurrected and is ready to provide coffee for all.

Congratulations to María Antonia Deal Gama, Ph.D. 2008, for the publication of her book Novelística de Tristán Solarte on the Panamanian author.

Congratulations to Spanish major Joshua Dunn who was selected as the recipient of the Maria Broach Award. Joshua, a double major in Linguistics who plans to work with Teach for America after graduation, was selected because of his exceptional academic record and his impressive dedication to education and community service. He is pictured below with Dr. Nina Hellerstein and Dr. Dana Bultman. The Department is honored to have received this gift remembering Mrs. Broach, who was born in Puerto Rico, was a Spanish teacher and had a lifelong passion for education.

Sarah Blackwell, associate professor of Spanish, has been named the 2009 Professor of the Year by the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Blackwell was recognized for her active participation in programs that promote foreign language studies in Georgia's educational institutions. She received the award at the chapter's annual meeting in March. Blackwell's primary areas of scholarly research include Spanish pragmatics, discourse analysis and applied linguistics.

Susan Quinlan teaches Portuguese at the University of Georgia and has taught at The Federal University of Pernambuco. Invited to the First International Colloquium of Connections: Itaú Bank Cultural Foundation, she participated in the final evaluation panel of the program and was interviewed (in Portuguese) about her teaching and research activities and her perspective on Brazilian Studies in the US.
1.In the first segment, Susan Quinlan talks about how she became interested in Portuguese motivated by two Professors, Abdias Nascimento e Silviano Santiago.
2. In the second segment, she talks about her research interests in gender and feminist studies
3. As a professor in a State University she speaks about the difficulties and problems in keeping a Portuguese undergraduate and graduate program successful in the United States and also about the joys and gratifications of having the program come this far.
4. In the last segment she articulates the importance of having the Portuguese program at the University of Georgia officially recognized by one of the most important private endowment for the arts in Brazil, The Itaú Bank Cultural Foundation. Go to the web page.

Mitch McCoy and Kenneth Widgren have been selected to participate in the Graduate School's Emerging Leaders Program. The Emerging Leaders Program is an invited leadership workshop sponsored by the Graduate School. Held during Fall Break, the program assists participants with not only understanding professional goals and leadership styles, but also with gaining personal insights. Congratulations! This award was recently created by a donation from Mrs. Alice Broach-Carlisle, in memory of her mother, Mrs. Maria Broach, a 1948 graduate of UGA. The award is for $500 and is intended for a truly outstanding advanced undergraduate major or MA student in Spanish.
