During September 15-October 15, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) hosted several events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Weekly and ongoing activities were held throughout the month.
Members of the Department of Romance Languages participated in the numerous events programmed for this celebration. Hildebrando Ruiz coordinated Cafe Tertulia (mediated discussions), where he also presented a talk entitled "El español como lengua de inmigración", Alaida Restrepo, Communication Sciences and Disorders, presented a talk entitled "The Importance of Maintaining a Child's Native Language," and Betina Kaplan presented hers entitled "Después del estado terrorista: producciones de madre en la narrativa del Cono Sur." Félix Vásquez organized and coordinated the Travelogue: Peruvian Series. For the Latin American Film Festival under the title "Documenting Reality: Threshold Between Fiction & History," José B. Alvarez selected four movies and conducted an after-screening debate at the Georgia Museum of Art. Elena Sarmiento and Luis Correa-Diaz coordinated the Poetry in the Garden (Poesía al fresco) series for which they invited the community to bring, read and share a Latin American poem in the Ethnobotanical Garden and the Founders Memorial Garden. At the Musical Forum, Benjamin Milano, Diego Del Pozo, Mónica Ruiz, and Fausto Sarmiento (CLACS) introduced us to musical traditions from Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Andes. Roberta Fernández coordinated the exhibit "American Voices: Latino Literature in the United States" at the First Floor of Main Library. Belén Epperson instructed us how to dance Salsa. The celebration closed at the Lyndon House Arts Center with a Colombian Art Exhibit sponsored by Consulate of Colombia in Atlanta, an ethnic dinner provided by the "Amigas de Atenas," and a dance.
