PROFESSOR CARMEN CHAVES TESSER HONORED

Carmen Tesser

Carmen Chaves Tesser, Professor of Romance Languages, has received the distinguished Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) 2002 Professor of the Year Award.  Professor Tesser received her B.A. and M.A. in Spanish and her Ph.D. in European Cultural History from Mississippi State University, where she also taught before joining the UGA faculty in 1983.  She has also taught at Ohio State University.  Professor Tesser is the author or co-author of numerous books and articles.  Her research interests include literary theory, cultural studies, Spanish literature, Brazilian literature, translation curriculum development, and the teaching of foreign languages.  She has been funded for research and professional development by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the United States Department of Education, and the Fulbright Commission.  Professor Tesser has received many awards for her teaching efforts, including the AATSP-Georgia Chapter Professor of the Year Award and the Josiah Meets Award for Excellence in Teaching.  The latter award is The University of Georgia's highest recognition for distinguished teaching.  In 1991, Professor Tesser received one of the Governor's Awards in the Humanities in Georgia, and, in 1998, King Juan Carlos of Spain recognized her with the Encomienda Alfonso X, El Sabio.  Professor Tesser has served the profession in many leadership capacities at the national level as well as locally.  She was President of the national AATSP; she serves on the Executive Committee of the Division on the Teaching of Language of the MLA; and she served on the Delegate Assembly and chaired the nominating Committee of ACTFL.  Locally, Professor Tesser currently serves as University Liaison to the Board of the Georgia Chapter of AATSP.  Furthermore, to add to the long list of distinguished achievements and recognitions, Professor Tesser has been chosen Director of the Portuguese School at Middlebury College Language Schools.  Congratulations, Carmen!  One can learn about Professor Tesser's philosophy of teaching in her enlightening article Great Myths of Successful Teaching, in Fred Stephenson's 2001 volume Extraordinary Teachers.  The essence of Excellent Teaching, (pages 167-174).  You will find more about Professor Tesser in her home page: www.arches.uga.edu/~carmen.
