Second Annual Student Symposium on Latino/a Literature and Culture

Under the coordination of Dr. Roberta Fernández, the Second Annual Student Symposium on Latino/a Literature and Culture took place on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, on the UGA campus. With the objective of giving students training in the professional presentation of academic papers while also making the Latino/a cultural presence felt on campus, the symposium was a three-part program.

The academic portion took place from 10:10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tate Center and consisted of the presentation of selected papers by undergraduate students enrolled in ROML 2550* (Fall Semester, 2002) and by all of the graduate students enrolled in SPAN 6800 (Spring Semester, 2003). Moderators were undergraduate Spanish majors.

At noon, members of the UGA Salsa Group performed dance numbers in the courtyard of Memorial Hall. This portion of the program was coordinated by Natalie Cox and Megan Crimmins, both of whom are members of the UGA Salsa Group. Natalie was enrolled in ROML 2550 in the Maymester 2002 session while Megan’s Honors thesis on “NAFTA and Its Effect on Women and the Environment,” directed by Dr. Fernández, played a major role in her being selected as UGA’s Outstanding Student of the Class of 2003.

The symposium ended with a reception at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies where the UGA Salsa Band, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Mc Cutchen of the Dept of Music, played Latin music on the porch of the CLACS house on Hull Street while the audience enjoyed refreshments in the gardens.

The symposium was sponsored by the Center for Humanities and Arts, Franklin College of Arts and Science, the Office of the V.P. for Instruction-Minority Advising Program, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Hispanic Student Association, Sigma Delta Pi (the National Honor Society in Spanish), and the reception was sponsored in part by the Department of Romance Languages.
