Puerto Rican-Themed Dinner at The Spanish Language Community

One of the highlights of the Fall 2003 season at the Mary Lyndon Hall Spanish Language Community was a Puerto Rican-themed dinner on the evening of Sunday, November 9, 2003. Mrs. Mimy Rivera cooked typical foods for the students. Another guest was Benjamin Milano, the Spanish preceptor in the Department of Romance Languages. No Puerto Rican gathering could be complete without some traditional music, so George Melendez and Monica Ruiz, the resident coordinators of the community, provided rhythm with "pleneras" (hand drums), as well as the lyrics to the songs. Together, the students, faculty, and guests sang and danced to some of the most famous Afro-Puerto Rican music, "Bomba"and "Plena.” In the picture above, Monica Ruiz and Benjamin Milano provide the rhythm section for one song.
