UGA in Niterói 2005

Program Dates: May 21-July 1, 2005.

Now in its fifth year, UGA in Niterói combines language classes with enriching cultural excursions to such famous landmarks as Sugar Loaf Mountain, Maracanã (the largest soccer stadium in the world), the Christ Statue, Rio's historic district, and Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Classes are communicative in nature and are supplemented by constant exposure to Portuguese with a Brazilian family at home and in numerous social activities. Service learning opportunities round off an international experience that past students have described as personally enriching and unforgettable. The first five weeks of the program are held in Niterói where students live with a host family and attend classes at UFF. For the final week, the program will relocate to an eco-lodge near the city of Manaus in the Amazon region of Northern Brazil.

The city of Niterói is ranked third in Brazil for quality of life. Located on the picturesque

Guanabara Bay, Niterói faces Rio de Janeiro and one of the most stunning natural and urban settings in the world. Nestled between dramatic green cliffs and white beaches, Niterói offers the friendliness of a relatively small city, while providing easy access (15 minutes by ferry) to Rio's vibrant cultural scene. Classes are held at the Federal Fluminense University campus, which is also located overlooking the bay and is adjacent to one of Brazil's most ambitious architectural projects, the Caminho Niemeyer.

Courses offered are in the program are PORT 1002, or PORT 2001, or PORT 2002, or PORT 3010, PORT 4010, and PORT 4040 Culture. The program costs include airfare to and from Brazil, trip to Manaus, room and two meals/day, local transportation, scheduled fieldtrips, and international travel insurance.
