Teresa Pérez-Gamboa: Spanish Professor of the Year

Teresa Pérez-Gamboa, Senior Academic Professional, was recently honored as "Spanish Professor of the Year" by the Georgia Chapter of American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Dr. Pérez-Gamboa, who holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in foreign language instruction from SUNY Stony Brook in New York, studied English linguistics at the University College in London, England, and did her undergraduate studies in Spanish Literature at the National University of Trujillo, in her native Perú.

Survival Spanish Class at Athens Clarke County Library

From January through the end of May 2005 a group of enthusiastic people interested in learning Spanish met every Sunday at the Athens Clarke County Library. This one-hour class was taught at no cost to those who had little or no knowledge of the language. Around fifteen people attended classes persistently until they were over. They learned basic fundamentals of Spanish like how to introduce and describe a person, talk about one’s family, preferences, time, etc.

Study Abroad: Montpellier 2005 by Debbie Bell

During the summer of 2005, UGA en France held its second year of courses in Montpellier. From its meager beginnings in 2004—when a total of ten students participated—the program nearly tripled in size in 2005, taking twenty-eight students on the eight-week homestay.

Cross Cultural Experiences in and out of the Classroom

As a recent graduate from the Department of Romance Languages, I have decided to round off my education with a trip to South America- a trip which provides me with the chance not only to polish off my language skills but, more importantly, to observe the cultures which I have studied for the last four years in a more personal manner.

Conference on the Future of Brazilian Studies

On September 30-October 1, 2005, Brown University and the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA) hosted a “Conference on the Future of Brazilian Studies in the United States.” The conference was the culmination of more than two years of discussions among a number of scholars in the United States who had been exchanging ideas about ways to promote Brazilian studies.
