Romance Language Students Receive Grants

Two Honors students majoring in Romance Languages, Katie Griffith and Liz Helburd, were among seven UGA Honors students who received grants from the Foundation for Sustainable Development, a non-profit organization committed to grassroots development initiatives in Asia, East Africa and Latin America.

Visiting Scholar

Gonzalo Aguilar, a researcher at the National Research Council (CONICET) in Argentina delivered a lecture at the University of Georgia’s Latino and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) on October 31, 2006. Aguilar presented the lecture, titled “In the White Forest: The Veiled Dialogue Between Helio Oiticia and Augusto and Haroldo de Campos”. The event was sponsored by LACSI and UGA’s Department of Romance Laguages.

Mary Lyndon Language Community

The Mary Lyndon Language Immersion program allows for students with an interest in language to connect with each other outside the classroom. With the help of a facilitator (the GR), as a community they are able to share an uncommon, on-campus living experience unavailable to most undergraduates at any university.

Semester Abroad with UGA in Buenos Aires

Fifteen students from UGA (Shannon Banks, Greg Bennett, Sarah Doss, Ansley Evans, Nicole Giannattasio, Mary Bryan Haltermann, Chris Joiner, Betsy Katz, Sarah Plaut, Ashley Poole, Anna Rockett, Sass Sperduto, Brian Strickland, Goodrich Wright, and Alicia Yanker) know quite well that the only place to do all these things is in the most magnificent capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires, or as it is known by its residents, BsAs. Beginning in mid-August, these fifteen students embarked on the first ever semester long cultural immersion program in Argentina developed and directed by Romance Language Assistant Professor of Spanish Betina Kaplan.

Study Abroad: Costa Rica

Ticos, mountains, tropical rain forest, gallo pinto, beaches and volcanos. Spanish and culture in Costa Rica offers students a wonderful, unique opportunity to experience all these facets of Central American life. For five weeks, students travel, study, learn Spanish and live with Costa Rican families in the San Luis Valley. All students take a conversation class (Span 3010 or 4010-Dr.Ascen Saenz) and a literature (Span 4080-Director Lesley Feracho) or history class (Hist.4200-Dr.Ian Lekus).

UGA in Spain

The Franklin College of Arts & Sciences, in partnership with the Terry College of Business, sponsors three study abroad sites in Spain: Valencia, Cádiz, and Sevilla, with the common goal of preparing undergraduates for a wide range of twenty-first century careers. In Valencia, we have a year-round program in which students take classes taught by research faculty at the University of Valencia.
