B.A. IN ROMANCE LANGUAGES

The Department of Romance Languages offers undergraduate programs in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish leading to the baccalaureate degree or a minor. We are one of the largest and most productive departments at the University of Georgia, with 29 professors having research specializations in literature and linguistics.

Our B.A. courses are integrative, meaning we offer a combined learning experience of language, literature, culture and theory. The curriculum is designed to improve students' linguistic competence at all levels and introduce the latest developments in cultural studies.

Foreign Language Career Opportunities
At the B.A. level we offer a wide variety of courses in linguistics, film, culture, and literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Our courses cover the many countries in the world where French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish are spoken, from Europe, to Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. Romance Languages is also one of the few Departments on campus that offers a "Practicum in Service Learning" course, whereby students receive UGA credit for volunteering in the local community. Other innovations include our Italian B.A., which now offers two tracks, one in Italian and the other in the increasingly popular Italian Studies. We also offer web-assisted courses in Spanish.

The Department sponsors popular undergraduate study abroad programs in Europe and Latin America. The Language Communities in French and Spanish continue to flourish as a result of a collaborative effort between the Department of Romance Languages, the Office of the Vice President for Instruction, the Department of Housing, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the Center for Humanities and Arts. The Language Communities provide students with the unique opportunity to enjoy a "total immersion" experience right here on campus.
