From Athens to Argentina: How a Modern Languages Scholarship Transformed One UGA Student’s Future

When Ansley Crowe arrived in Buenos Aires for her 15-week study abroad experience, she expected to improve her Spanish. What she found was a new sense of purpose — and a life she built in another language.

A double major in Political Science, International Affairs, and Spanish in UGA’s Morehead Honors College, Ansley received the Modern Languages Scholarship, which made her participation in the Buenos Aires study abroad program possible.

By the end of her semester abroad, Buenos Aires felt like home.

She lived with her host mother, Carmen, sharing late-night conversations around the dinner table and bonding over everyday routines like washing dishes together. She joined a local gym, became involved in a neighborhood church, and grew to know the employees at her favorite coffee shop by name. She took weekly tango lessons, attended an Argentina vs. Venezuela soccer match — where Lionel Messi scored twice — and even hiked in Patagonia.

But beyond the vibrant cultural immersion, Ansley thrived academically.

In her Spanish-language courses, she studied Argentine culture, history, literature, and Latin American film, engaging deeply with professors and classmates in entirely Spanish-speaking environments. Outside the classroom, she earned course credit through work with the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo), the renowned human rights organization dedicated to identifying children stolen during Argentina’s military dictatorship (1976–1983).

“That experience profoundly shaped me,” Ansley reflected. “I was able to study this history firsthand and witness the ongoing work of justice and identification. It showed me how I can use Spanish in meaningful, professional ways.”

Now, she plans to bring her Spanish-speaking skills into the legal field — equipped not just with language proficiency, but with cultural fluency, global awareness, and lived experience.

“This trip would not have been possible without the generosity of the Modern Languages Scholarship,” Ansley said. “Thank you for helping students like me study abroad.”
