Dr. Bruno Sales serves as the Assistant Director of the Portuguese Flagship Program and the Portuguese Language Program Supervisor at the University of Georgia. His extensive background in teaching spans across various institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and his current position at the University of Georgia.

Since his return to UGA in 2020, Dr. Sales has played a key role in the planning and implementation of the Portuguese Flagship Program (PFP). Recently, he played a pivotal role in the renewal of the PFP federal grant, guaranteeing its continuation for another four-year cycle. Additionally, he has played a central role in improving the rate of academic success of the program. As Dr. Sales is also an ACTFL-ILR Portuguese tester, rater, and trainer, and he has deployed this unique training and understanding of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) to assist PFP students achieve ILR3, both through direct pedagogical interventions, and by training PFP tutors and redesigning the tutorial program. 


Dr. Sales also contributes to the enrichment of the program through his academic and research training and experience. He received his MA and PhD in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia. In 2020 he conceived and co-edited a volume commemorating the 40-year anniversary of the publication of António Lobo Antunes’ debut novel, which brought together leading experts from around the world and was published in the esteemed Santa Barbara Portuguese Studies journal. Dr. Sales’ main area of research focuses on modern contemporary Lusophone literature, and more concretely with modern Portuguese prose. Additionally, his research interests include Literary Theory.
